March
The Griffith Law School held its first Internal Mooting competition. Six teams were chosen from many applicants.
The schedule was arranged so that all teams would moot three times and then the two teams with the overall highest scores would go through to the final.
The Judges for the rounds were Martin Collins B.L, Taidhg Dorgan B.L, Siobhan Leonard, Roderic O'Gorman, Joanna Joyce B.L, Barry Vickers and Nadine Conlon Byrne.
The standard was extremely high and all teams received excellent feedback from the judges which they found very helpful. All of the judges were very complimentary about the teams and this reflected in the scores awarded, with there being only 5 points in the difference between first and last in the overall scores!
Following lunch the two teams who battled their way to the final were Tash Van Eerden and David Smyth for the Applicant, and Shawn Blundell and Malachy Ryan for the Respondent.
The Impressive judging panel for the final consisted of Catherine Lucey Neale B.L, Gerard Danaher S.C and our own Dean of Law and stalwart supporter of the Mooting Society, David Langwallner B.L.
Following a lengthy deliberation, Mr Danaher S.C commended both teams on their arguments and professionalism. He also stated that he was thoroughly impressed with the standard of the speakers. He then announced that the winning team were Sean and Malachy. They are to be heartily congratulated on their performance.
April
Mooting News
Korede Esho and Changiz Durani took part in the inaugural NUI Moot Over Friday and Saturday 15th and 16th April. They were faced with an extremely tough problem question but battled their way to the final on Saturday afternoon where they argued for the respondent against a very competent NUI Maynooth team, in front of the Head of the Law Faculty, a Solicitor from MOP and Justice McMenamin of the High Court.Despite a brave effort they narrowly lost out on bringing the cup home to Griffith College. They both performed admirably throughout the competition under heavy questioning from the judges. It is a great achievement for them to have got to the final of their very first competition.
