Name: Claire Michelle Smyth
Course: LLM in International Human Rights Law
Year: Graduate 2011
Lecturers: I have just completed the LLM in International Human Rights Law at GCD and have found it to be a fantastic experience. The lecturers on this course were all first rate, they encourage students to question existing law and form their own opinions, which makes for a lively exchange of ideas in the classroom. They are always available to speak to students about any queries and are very approachable. The Law Faculty staff and library staff have been fantastic and cannot do enough to help students with any issues.
What advice would you give to others considering this course: The LLM has vastly improved my knowledge of International law and Human Rights Law and I would highly recommend this course to anyone thinking of doing a Masters in this area.
Where are you now: I am now employed as a Law tutor and the skills which I have learned throughout the LLM are essential to my current role. I am also in the process of applying for a PhD in the University of Ulster in a related discipline to the LLM. The dissertation element of the LLM prepared students who are thinking of undertaking a PhD for the research and discipline that will be needed to complete a PhD.
Other comments: I cannot speak highly enough of GCD, through my time with them they have encouraged me to engage in extra curricular activities, have supported me whenever I have needed it and have given me opportunities which I am very grateful for.
