The lab focused on the study of relation between P53 gene and breast cancer, biological model, WT1 gene (kidney cancer). After two years of study, I published an article with my colleagues on "Progress in American Science" (PNS). I done the main work and Sara wrote the article, as the article was published, I was the third author, and this was so good.
This time, pressure from my family life was particularly great. My wife and daughter had both come, while my daughter Yu Zhou was born a mentally retarded child, crying all day, could not take care of herself to the toilet. In her age of the kindergarten, we sent her to a kindergarten then another kindergarten where almost no one was adaptive. My wife and I were very busy at work, we discussed and came to an agreement that two of us, who went to work later then who sent daughter to the kindergarten. As every day I read, learned and studied into very late, so it became my patent to send daughter to the kindergarten. While my daughter were always crying after getting up in the morning every day, and was reluctant to go to kindergarten, so I was often late for my daughter, of course felt ashamed. Supervisor Sara was very understanding me, every time she saw me with the apology way, comforted me and said: "Never mind, child is also very important, come late then go late." Look, this was my supervisor; I thanked Sara from the bottom of my heart.
My daughter was born in the year when I graduated from the post graduate. Just at her birth, she was not different from the other children, later we gradually discovered her mental retardation, which was my lifelong regret, and I felt very sorry to her.

At that time I was just assigned to work in China-Japan Friendship Hospital, while my wife was admitted to a postgraduate at department of pediatrics in Peking Union Medical College Hospital, so we had to entrust our daughter to the care of the family of my father-in–law, and I felt guilty for giving birth to her while little supporting. I always missed her after going abroad, a few times I teared. As I had been in the USA for 10 months, I transacted all procedures for my wife to the United States, the second years I asked my friend Han Nian to take my daughter to the United States who was to return China to visit relatives. Now think of it, I was still very grateful for his help.
The influence of my first superior caused that I was always thinking about how to apply my research to clinical therapy when I researched from various angles of molecular biology. These mysterious techniques of molecular biology had not direct relationship with cancer treatment. I tried every means, cudgeled my brains, molecular biology propped up a sky in my mind, in the sky, I studied and searched for the cancer treatment constantly.
It had disadvantages with Sinil’s therapy of intratumor injection of alcohol and drugs. How to improve it and do better? The problem of how to apply it to clinical had been always tangled me. I was also very focused on the clinical application at the stage when I was reading master degree in domestic, so while I was engaging the fundamental research, I never forgot to combine with clinical medicine, which was called translational medicine.
In 1993, Professor Sara asked eight of us postdoctoral fellows to apply for research funding, then I spent a lot of time sorting and reading literature, wrote "On the change rules of fore-and-aft menstruation by comparison breast cancer P53 between Chinese and American " As there were certain differences in the changes of breast cancer P53 at fore-and-aft menstruation between Sino-US women, then I applied for the funding of the future of science development from the Department of Research and Development of Army Medical, USA.
I finished the tender independently, while supervisor Sara modified it seriously who was a very experienced professors and had published many articles on magazine "Science". Supervisor was very humility and made me the chief which was also called as the first researcher.
I was mad with joy that I could be the chief for the first time to apply for research funding in the United States, which was very important for me, as far as the funds or not, I did not think over. That times, getting the funding was very difficult, most people including Sara, none dare to wish getting the money, several other veteran postdoctoral was also the chief as well as in the application of funds. In the United States, postdoctoral was not a profession, after graduation and over a period of study, who then could go on the stage of independent research, while professors and associate professors were professions.
Sara was leaving Salk to be a professor in other university, but most of the postdoctoral fellows were not to follow her, as most of them had families, bought a house in Santiago, and then they were very inconvenient to go with her, so she encouraged her postdoctoral to self financing, or to find a new work.
I did not want to leave either, as I had bought a house in Santiago since I had been in the United States for four years, when most people could not understand me: lending so much money, how to repay; and the work was not stable, so majority of Chinese students did not buy a house. I thought Santiago was too beautiful to go anywhere else, where I relied. Beautiful environment was a big advantage, but also I felt it was not very worthwhile to pay the rent every month, which was to help others repay mortgage. A friend from Taiwan who was doing this business always wanted to help me to buy a house. Finally in October 1993, I spent $172,000 buying a villa not far from the University City, which was not large, with 3 bedrooms, 2 halls and 2 washrooms as well as front and back yards. It was asked for $215,000. With a bargain, we paid $20,000 as deposit, signed a pile of forms, and then bought the house by loan. We finally had our own satisfying house through painting and decoration, replacing a new carpet in the room, cleaning up the overgrown weeds and trees as well as covering a gravel road. Later, the price of the house rose continuously to $400,000, then to $800,000 in 2005, which made me earn a lot.
Time passed quickly, it was almost a year since the postdoctoral fellows had declared scientific research funds, which was still no result. Sara had decided to be a professor to the eastern John Hopki Medicine College, only one went with her who was just doing the research before long.
We went to find a job one after another, and I wanted to try at a biological company, to experience the company's situation, after all I had to pay the mortgage every month, and I was absolutely able to afford without work, so it was more important than anything to find a new job as soon as possible.
I found a job of biological diagnosis in a biotechnology company, which was half a day, in the distant San Marco, and I took the job with an attitude of learning. Less than two months, Secretary of Sara called me: "Baofa, Come to Salk quickly. There is something important for you." The second day I went to Salk, arriving at the original laboratory.
Unexpectedly I got the research funding! More than $16,000 for breast cancer research, which was a lot of money, every one congratulated me. Meanwhile Chen Ying also got the funding who was from Shanghai before long; while none of other postdoctoral did not. Both of us were Chinese, how fortunate we were and how honor we were for Chinese! The funding for me was for four years, that was equivalent to a job of four years, so I need not to worry about the wages any more.
That day in the laboratory, everyone rushed to congratulate me, I felt a little of walking on air. How the envy they gave to me! It was not a coincidence that two of Chinese researchers got the scientific research funds of two items at the same time; it proved the strength of Chinese.
As I was the chief, no longer paid by the boss from the scientific research fund which was governed by me wholly, that was to say I was my own boss. It was really not easy that just only four years in the USA I became the chief, and as a chief I got the sum of money, while most to the overseas students were studying PhD as they paid attention to the degrees, which cost them 4 to 5 years to graduate. Looking from this point, I caught up with the doctor of 8 years or post doctor of 10years in USA, sometimes I was do very lucky!
Later, back home, my identity of chief had ever been questioned by someone in China: it was impossible for Yu Baofa to be the chief for his education as well as only a few years in the USA; it was surely that his boss was the chief, while he was at best a deputy chief. To tell the truth, is it necessary to lie for me? America is still on the earth though it was very far, and the people knowing and understanding me Yu Baofa were so many, facts speak louder than words, only the truth was convincing.
1.8 Again I returned to the University of California, San Diego, as I was hired to be a university professor there, while I was always thinking about returning my motherland
Sara was leaving; while we did not want to go to the East with her, of course, Serra was willing to let me and Chen Ying go to the John Hawkins College of medicine with the sum of money, going on the original research, after all, both of us were not willing to leave the beautiful Santiago. I would like to return to the University of California, Santiago, where there was the research close to clinical direction, and also related to molecular biology, while it was very hard to find the research project with application value for me temporarily.
At that moment, I suddenly got a message which said there was lack the researchers at the Department of Orthopedics in University of California, Santiago. How good an opportunity! There was an experiment combined with biological engineering, Director Paul Song was interested to me after realizing the conditions about me, as I had a deep understanding to molecular biology, then combined with biological engineering and biomechanics, I could certainly make some achievements. He recommended me actively, coupled with the recommendation by John, the director of Department of Orthopedics, the president of University of California, Santiago signed me to be an assistant professor.
That day, I, a Chinese, hired as a professor, was driving a new Buick car, which immediately attracted Chinese students’ attention: Yu Baofa had not published somewhat important articles, no great achievement, directly did postdoctoral in the United States with no doctoral degree, while gained the title of assistant professor, what a surprising! Indeed, it was rare at the time, the probability less than 5%.
There were several Chinese students at the Paul laboratory such as Yang Li and Shi Yan, also some other Chinese scholars in other laboratories, we often chatted together as well as often went to a small restaurant for dinner. As we meeting, most topics were admiring and praising me, in the applause, I got a little satisfaction, unexpectedly I became an example of others. So, often there were some friends asking me to talk about my experience in the United States, of course I imparted them without any reservation.
I together with Yang Li engaged in the research of the adhesion force of P16 gene and osteosarcoma cells, as P16 deletion, adhesion force decreases, so we published several abstracts. As my interest was not like that of general doctors, I did not care how many articles to be published, and I thought there was not inevitable relations between writing articles and clinical treatment, always wanted to learn Professors Sinil to find approach to cure cancer, seeking the code to open cancer "black hole", which, I thought, was more important than publishing articles.
Of course, it was the conventional approach and understandable to publish article in the United States which could win a certain accumulation and score, pave the way for work and promotion. If the research of big practical value were not worked out, with these articles someone could still find a work in the United States, even be promoted to Associate Professor.
While my heart was filled with cancer patients, I thought it was true research to combine research with clinical, the invention was more valuable to benefit patients, I must not be stalled, would not let envy for Assistant Professor from the eyes of others to meet me, I should look forward, not stop.
So no sooner had I settled my completed research, than I put myself into the study of my dreams.
I took a single plank bridge to be bound to take out a research result of practical cancer therapy. During the four years as Assistant Professor, I did not do too much foundational research, but pondering a new method of cancer treatment which others did not think about, that was today's "releasing storage therapy". Of course I took great risk: if I had not succeeded, I would be very difficult to return to academia, and then I had secretly planned to return.
I was very willing to chat anything all over the country with my friends, also I often helped Chinese friends to move their houses, as most of the Chinese in the United States were united and friendly, often held parties from this home to the other, we got together to chat the survival in the United States, stories in our life, the experience and dreams of return to pursue careers in China. We encouraged each other, learned from each other, gradually I became a leader of a generation of Chinese, began to introduce some ideas of returning and pursuing careers to everyone. Later at several entrepreneurial experience exchange meetings of Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Santiago, I made statements for a few times with the theme: How to let more Chinese people to return and pursue careers in China.
Over more than 10 years, it proved that the overseas students were with good vision to return early to entrepreneurship. Now there were "Plan of Thousands of People", "Plan of Spring Thunder" in China, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of State Council had held twelve sessions Home Business Forum for overseas Chinese. Tens of thousands of overseas students were coming back, majority entered in universities and research institutes; minority pursued their careers, running a variety of companies. "Returnees" were welcomed by the National People; the state had also promulgated a series of related preferential policies to encourage overseas returnees entrepreneurship.
I am now an old "returnee", leading home business very well, one step ahead. Feng Shusen, when as the Consul General in Losangeles, wrote the inscription to me in 1998: "One step ahead, you will achieve great!" Although not achieving great, after all, I had opened Tumor Hospital down-to-earth, treated cancer for people really, and our medical services for fifteen years, I believe, were satisfying for the people.
Professor Sara had ever been to China to see me in 1998, and visited Taimei Baofa Tumour Hospital which I run in the countryside.
Professor Sinil had never been to China, whom I met in Santiago several times, another once I met him was at the meeting of the Institute of cancer research in the USA.2010. At the Conference of American Society of Clinical Oncology in 2011, we met again, as he realized my achievements now, he was very happy and said: "Baofa, it seems the next step I have to work for you."
I was mad with joy to see my tutor: "You are my teacher forever!"
1.9 As my friends ventured one by one, which motivated my conviction of returning to operate my own enterprise
It certainly needed a sum of money for venture; most people were all faced with the difficulty of financing at initial. I called it the hardship of funds, itching of funds and the pain of funds, which was the threshold that every entrepreneur could not avoid. Some people were born lucky with enough money from his ancestors. Most of us were not so lucky who were the overseas students from America in 1980s, China just began the reform and opening up, when million households had been very great, and we were all basically the “Poor II”. Of course, some of us could have saved a sum of money for stay in the USA for a long time while which was not enough for entrepreneurship.
There is no distinction between me and other students, as I was in the United States for only a few years, and my deposit was also not much. I became a house slave as I bought a house in 1994, then for mortgage payments monthly which was a lot of money. Since 1994 I had been dreamed of entrepreneurship, repeatedly pondering, where was my start-up funds from? It was very easy to register a company In the United States, only one day, to take a form from the government mansion, to fill it out and sign. That’s all. But the difficult was having no money.
During this period, I had been working at Salk for almost two years, and met a lot of people; some of them had started the company. I was a frequent visitor in parties when I was very appreciate others for their entrepreneurship.
Santiago was a good place for outstanding, gathering of talents and the cradle of entrepreneurs.
Shen Chun started up his pioneering very early who set up an EGen company and became the general manager to produce artificial insulin which there was no in China at that time, they also planned to come to China to apply for drug approval number, his start-up funding come from a Chinese in Losangeles - Mr. Zhai’s investment of $500000. A few years later, Boss Shen really got the national quasi word no. medicine of artificial insulin in China where he opened up a new field. He was one of the "Six Gentlemen" on gene drug at that time. Yu Mang from Zhejiang University in China got the doctor degree in the United States when he had been the general manager of Immuso Company, which was a typical Vc firm. Later he and his wife as partnership set up their own company, of which the start-up capital was from two parts: a large sum of money of financing and military research funding. He engaged in the research on influenza vaccine and become a parvus success man in the circle of Bio & Medicine in Santiago. Wang Mingwei also ventured earlier in Santiago who was a character of miracles, early flied shiftily between Sino-US. He founded several companies in Santiago, and the joint venture company by him and an American focused on the anticancer drug by screening of traditional Chinese medicine, they also had established a national drug screening center in Shanghai where I was invited to visit, very admirable.
There was another person who I must mention, Cui Shujie, graduated from Grade 1979 of Henan Medical College in China, who was in connection with my idea of entrepreneurship. In 1992, he came to Santiago, took office in a famous company on application of biotechnology (ABI) created by a man from Taiwan, which was a biotechnology company to produce the test strip of diagnosis for early pregnancy. We did not know each other but hearing about mutually in China. In 1991 I went to a meeting in Houston, Texas; Xiao Cui was on his research at Anderson cancer center in Houston. In his "site", how would we not meet? We felt very cordial as we met, "Lao Yu" so Cui Chang called me. I lived in his dormitory for two days during we talked about a lot of things with each other. He was a Chinese Medicine Bachelor, and had not Master or doctoral Degrees in domestic, while in the United States he was still the doctor of clinical medicine, and with the same qualifications to do research work. In 1994, for the first time I returned home, Cui Shujie asked me to explore how to do business in China. After returning home I walked a few places, but couldn't find the feeling of doing business. That time, in fact, I had nothing else only the faith of venture. While Xiao Cui had opened a company early in Santiago, to produce one-step diagnosis test, which was a diagnostic method very popularly. He had run the company for 16 years, and bought his own workshop. Later, he even invented a urine cup, of which the bottom with a small hole connected a special diagnosis test outside, and a valve link in the middle. Opening the switch, the urine flew out from the hole on bottom of the cup and through the test, so the diagnosis was very convenient, very scientific. He applied for a patent for invention, and got it.
There were also some small companies around me which were self financing, belonging to the small company of entrepreneuring, making money and inputting at the same time, a model of rolling development, which was my example.
Many scholars all over the world were willing to study and work in Santiago. In 1990s, the number of Chinese people in Santiago had reached to 20,000, now up to 100,000. Santiago was one of the bases of biological medicine in the United States where the Salk Research Institute and Scripps Research Institute both enjoyed the world famous, and there were 8 Nobel prize winners came from the Salk.
On various meetings in China, I often met returning entrepreneurs, among them a lot of were from Santiago, such as Zhang Hamming of Suzhou, Peng Zhaohui of Shenzhen, Wang Mingwei of Shanghai, Geng Yu of Suzhou and Yang Meng of Beijing.
When I participated in the entrepreneurship Fair of overseas Chinese sponsored by Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council in Wuhan in 2012, I met Zhang Weiwei who had founded the GeneWay Conpany and GeneStar Company. In 1996 he once dominated the bio-pharmaceutical cooperation between Baxter Company of America the Global 500 and Military Medical Science Academy of the PLA in China, he represents Baxter investing $2000000 to Baihuan Biological Medicine Research Institute built by the two parties. Zhang Weiwei was also the true inventor of the world's first gene therapy with recombinant human P53 adenovirus (Gendicine). In 2003 gene drug P53 was appeared on the market successfully in China, while he did not appeared for working in the United States until 2010 returning home. He is now the honorary chairman and chief scientist of SiBiono Gene Technology Co., Ltd., Shenzhen, the honor he should be received.
In China, the Chinese scientists from Santiago can be seen everywhere, from this point of view, Santiago’ contribution to China is very much.
Santiago had also created a number of persons taking charge of the important positions at important sectors in China.
Zhan Qimin, my classmate, a doctor of clinical medicine from China just as me, went to Santiago in 1989, doing postdoctoral research at the National Institutes of America, later became an assistant professor. In 2004 he returned to China, took over the director of a key famous biology laboratory. Later for the excellent work, outstanding achievements, he was elected as vice president of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, in December, 2011 was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering.
Cheng Jing, born in Sichuan, a Dr in USA., whose strong point was on biomedical chip. He came back to Tsinghua University setting up a national center in 2003. He had both his own company in China and branch in Santiago, and had ever been interviewed by the state leaders, early became an academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering.
In those days, I often went to the seaside of Santiago, standing on the clean beaches, with the sea breeze blowing me, as far as my eyes seeing, in distance the sea and the sky merged into one, I was of good heart extremely. In the blue sky, there were some white clouds floating which was really like cotton, loose high cotton, soothing floating. I seemed to find that white clouds were in wind toward the direction of my motherland, auspicious clouds! It must be the auspicious clouds in legend, at the moment, my heart was in wind with the clouds......
I always had the belief of entrepreneurship in domestic.
With the motive power of entrepreneurship, but also I had to learn some entrepreneurial ability. Commonly it was all right that I was to be a doctor with undivided attention as I had studied medicine, while I just tossed about endlessly, as the cancer "black hole" was still there, and the idea always around me to solve the code of the "black hole".
To be a doctor is not difficult, to be a good doctor is very difficult, while to be a good doctor still with invention and entrepreneurship is more difficult! I am also just as grounding iron stick into a needle, tempering iron into steel.
In 1995 I accompanied with Robert Branderfu, the owner of Brinell Microscope, the United States went to run a study class at Dezhou in Shandong Province of China, when I had acted as a translator for three days, then accompanied with them to Qingdao Medical College to talk about cooperation, which almost tired me to death. Thereafter, I had flied to and from between China and America for dozens of times, mostly as a translator.
In number times of my returning, I re-recognized China. I analyzed successively the national conditions, business and hospitals in China, then I met many of my university classmates from Beijing to Shandong, from Jinan to Qingdao, from Dongping to other counties. It should be said that I had done a social investigation.
I was a bit failed to accommodate as I saw the rapid changes in motherland, I thought: I became a silly as studying abroad, and I must get out of the fool firstly then to do pioneering work.
Most people thought that those who could study abroad were certainly not stupid, while be abroad for so many years in the United States, I had been adapted to American style of conduct in society which was simple, clear and straightforward. It was much simpler to do business in the United States than in China, in contrast, it seemed a bit silly of me!
Since 1990s, with the development and changes of China's economy, people's thinking has changed a lot. In the early stage of reform and opening up, a lot of people to do business were cheated by others with a careless, while now they would not be cheated any more as they paid the tuition fully. At the time, we overseas students did not learn commercial operation in the United States, most of us were studying science, being professor and researching at laboratory, not businessmen at all, so we were really un-adaptable to entrepreneurship in domestic.
It must take off the “silly” of a scholar to return and pursue careers, then take off the “silly” in business as well as the “silly” on the interpersonal relationship.
One year I came back, Lao Zhang, Dean of Tumor Hospital of Shandong Province came to my sister’s home where I lived for a few days. There he told me about his experience of running a company in Jinan. He founded the Wright Medical Equipment Company with main business on maintenance of computer tomography (CT), sales of second-hand computer tomography (CT), which was very prosperous, so he asked me find a good quality computer tomography(CT) for him in the United States. After returning to the United States, I went to San Francisco recognizing a boss called Smith at a meeting of radiation treatment, ordered an excellent computer tomography (CT), so quickly a business of computed tomography (CT) had been done. This was the first time for my training in the business field, which was a lesson given by the old dean on how to start an enterprise in China.
In 1990s, it was very popular to import second-hand medical equipment in China, which was basically a number of very good quality equipment. That time, I found sources for domestic companies, such as accelerator, computed tomography (CT) and other large medical equipments, increased income for my American company, while the second-hand equipment should have promoted the development of hospitals in domestic at that moment.
Meanwhile, I actively prepared for Dongping Tumor Hospital. Equipments were indispensable to open a hospital, so you must know how to buy equipments of both good quality and low price. In addition, I actively prepared the matters of land acquisition, building and others to run the hospital; the whole process was the programs of entrepreneurial MBA in China. As long as not stupid, as long as work hard, I can learn and learn well, of course, it should be sometimes with luck to run a business to succeed.
